Dr. Jeff Roberts is a composer, improviser and researcher working in interdisciplinary areas of intercultural music making, electroacoustic music and multi-media performance. His music explores relationships between different music styles and cultures. His work has been recognized with awards from the Fulbright Foundation, Korea Foundation and Asian Cultural Council among others. His compositions have received multiple awards and have been commissioned and performed worldwide. His study of guqin at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in China with guqin master Li Xiangting has led to an active performing career on guqin. Partnering with Korean piri master gamin, he co-founded the East Asian improvisation ensemble ‘PAN Project’ which has toured North America and East Asia. He works with interactive soundscape installation and collaborated with sculptor Roger Feldman on the sound installation ‘Reconstructed Ecologies’, which received the 2016 Jack Straw New Media Award and was shown in Seattle, Washington. He is currently recording a CD of guqin improvisations and compositions funded by Jack Straw Artist Support Award. He holds a PhD in Composition from Brandeis University. He is an Assistant Professor of East Asian Music in Culture in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Alberta in Canada.
